Fort Dennison Saturday 27th March 2010

On Sydney harbour is a sandstone fort called Fort Dennison (after Governor Dennison). It originally was a rocky island, levelled by convict labour and turned into a fort by the English. It has never been used in anger except for a stray shot by US Chicago by mistake (which incidentally only left a slight mark on the stone!)

As we hadn't been there since we were children, we decided to pay a visit. The ferry trip out was run by Matilda Cruises and was fantastic. It went all around the harbour and showcased Sydney from the water.

On arrival at the Fort we went on a short tour, learned all about the Martello Tower, the cannons and the Barracks.  We saw the Tide Room from where all NSW tides are charted. While having lunch, we heard the 1pm cannon retort which allows all maritime vessels to set their clocks and charts.

We then had lunch at the cafe where we shared a bottle of vino, kicked back and watched the ever changing kaleidoscope of sailing vessels passing by.

We left the fort and returned to the Quay by ferry and toured the Rocks Markets.

We had afternoon tea at Botany Bay watching the planes land and take off, even saw two A380s amongst many others.

A perfect end to a perfect Indian Summer's day in our gorgeous capital city.

Queen Mary 2 in Sydney (7th march 2010)

Sunday afternoon we went to Pieta & Kel`s to watch the Queen Mary 2 come into Sydney. So up the tower we went and had a great view of her all the way in the heads and down the harbour. Then after some afternoon tea we drove down to Garden Island and watched her tie up.

Suzy & Paul visit again or (bring the rain again)

5th,6th & 7th February 2010

Suzy & Paul arrived Thursday night for another visit and another try to see the blue mountains. Well it rained again as soon as they arrived and stopped just after their plane left on Sunday. So no blue mountains but we did do the city on Saturday...and yes we did get very wet....walked through the Rocks markets, then walked over the bridge then down to the quay to catch the ferry to Manly, which let Suzy & Paul see the city from the water. Had fish & chips and of course a big ice cream in Manly then back to the city. We walked around the Opera House and it was great to look at it through visitors eyes instead of just taking it for granted. ....even in the rain....Then walked back to the car via George st looking at Queen Victoria Building , Town Hall and the shops. Home for a bbq and just a sit around and chat.
Sunday up early for a lovely breaky of hot coffee and pancakes, then off to the airport. Dropped Suzy & Paul in time to catch the plane to Melbourne..had a great time with them again, lots of fun and great traveling tips. We went to the travel expo just to get the 2010/11 travel books so we can do more planning for the trip. ....(of course it wasn`t raining anymore because Suzy & Paul had gone....)
